Underground Rome and its lost empire ruins

The catacombs are famous burial places in Rome. Mazes of tunnels, examples of early Christian art and thousands of bodies!!! Why? Burials were forbidden inside the walls of Rome. Then miles and miles of tunnels were cut into the tufa stone and used as burial chambers.

Rome’s Via Appia Antica is in fact outside the walls of Rome and it was a burial place for early Christians as well as for pagans. A guided tour lasting 20 minutes to an hour will bring you in the intestines of Rome.

The Catacombs of St. Callixtus (Catacombe di San Callisto) has the longest network of galleries in the capital. About 19 km long and 20 meters deep, here you will find the crypt of nine popes and early Christian frescoes, paintings, and sculptures.

The Catacombs of St. Sebastian (Catacombe di San Sebastiano) has about 11 km of tunnels but the tour includes a very small area. Here there are early Christian mosaics and graffiti.
Catacombs of St. Domitilla (Catacombe di San Domitilla) are the oldest catacombs in Rome. The entrance is inside a fourth century church. Interesting to visit here is a second century fresco representing the Last Supper.
St. Priscilla’s Catacombs (Catacombe di Priscilla) are from the late second century AD and for this reason among Rome’s oldest catacombs.

Body Worlds exhibition in Rome: go and discover the human body

Body Worlds is the original anatomical exhibition series displaying authentic human bodies, willed by donors through the Institute for Plastination’s Body Donor Program! They are preserved using a process called plastination invented by Dr. von Hagens.

Real human parts are preserved through the science of plastination and show the human body in real-life poses, like never seen before.

Body Worlds – Il vero mondo del corpo umano is in Rome from 14 settembre 2011 up to 15 february 2012 for the first time in Italy at Officine Farneto, close to Stadio Olimpico.

is a man shaped by extraordinary events: as we read in the main siteGunther von Hagens of the Body Worlds: “two year imprisonment by East German authorities for political reasons, his release after a $20,000 payment by the West German government, his pioneering invention of plastination that halts decomposition of the body after death and preserves it for didactic purpose, his collaboration with donors including his best friend, who willed and entrusted their bodies to him for dissection and public display, and his role as a teacher carrying on the tradition of Renaissance anatomists”.

Von Hagens says himself: “I was looking at a collection of specimens embedded in plastic. It was the most advanced preservation technique then, where the specimens rested deep inside a transparent plastic block. I wondered why the plastic was poured and then cured around the specimens rather than pushed into the cells, which would stabilize the specimens from within and literally allow you to grasp it.”

Roma Film Festival is coming in October

The sixth edition of the International Rome Film Festival will be held from October 27 to November 4, 2011, at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica, the spectacular arts complex created by world-famous architect Renzo Piano.

Rome Film Festival starts in late October: so you have a plenty of time to book your flights and go Rome!

The event will include international movie premiers, a fab competition, and lots of collateral events. So in the while you are going to see the Colosseo and Michelangelo’s painting in Sistina Chapel, or waving at the Pope from Piazza San Giovanni, maybe you will find sometimes also to enjoy a great film fest!

The festival will be occupying five theatres – Santa Cecilia, Sinopoli, Petrassi, Teatro Studio, and Studio 3 – reserved for screenings and encounters, while the Foyer, Auditorium Arte, Spazio Risonanze and the Museo Archeologico will host an array of other events.
The Official Selection is the main event and it is a meaningful gist of its artistic and stylistic identity. The selection will present a lineup of feature films both in competition and out of competition.

We have 4 section as a whole. As we can read from the guide to the events and to the selection: “Featured in Extra are world or European premiere documentaries in competition, a selection of cutting-edge, independent feature films, as well as encounters and cinema lessons. Alice nella città targets youth cinema and is divided into 2 sections depending on the age of the viewing public.”

The last one is Focus, an “eclectic cross-disciplinary section turns its spotlight on special features that the selected country has to offer, presenting different arts and genres from all over the world”. Great occasion to take a vacation, some days off and enjoing not only the eternal city, but also one of the most exciting film festival in Italy!

Glam, great movies and an international stars “river” will come and celebrate the magic of Rome. A great scenario in which pictuirng yourself and a cinema festival, isn’it?
